Pumped storage hydropower plant is so far the most effective and capacious way to store the surplus energy in the off-peak hours for the need of peak hours. The first pumped storage project in Taiwan is the Ming-Hu Pumped Storage Project. Immediately followed is the Ming-Tan Pumped Storage Project. TEMES, Inc. served as the engineering consultant in joint-venture with Sinotech Engineering Consultant for both of these projects. TEMES, Inc. was responsible for the mechanical and electrical portion of the projects. Ming-Hu, having four units with a total capacity of 1,000MW, was completed in August 1985. Ming-Tan, having six units with a total capacity of 1,600MW, was one of the largest and most modern pumped storage power plants in the world upon completion in 1993.
